Rowhouse basements and tight hookups
Most South Philly laundry lives in an unfinished basement or a back-of-kitchen closet, on hookups that were added decades after the house was built. Cramped clearances, old shutoff valves and a floor drain that's seen better days are the norm — these are exactly the spaces we're set up for, so a leaking washer in a narrow basement doesn't slow us down.
Stackables and compact units
Space is tight, so a lot of homes here run a stacked washer-dryer or a compact 24-inch machine instead of a full-size pair. A lot of the appliances down here are older Kenmores, Whirlpools and GEs that still have good years left in them.
